Union Eagle Infantry Button, this button was found on the south side of the garage about fifteen feet out from the center of the garage. Mathews County was always confederate territory, but confederate soldiers did not always have the money or the means to have the perfect uniform, and were known to use whatever means was necessary including using union buttons.
Springdale was used as an infirmary during the Civil War, and certainly would have been occupied by the Yankee's during their invasion of Mathews in early Oct. 1863. At that time the 11th Pennsylvania Cavalry conducted a house to house search that lasted for 3 days, and resulted in the torture and hanging of one Mathews resident "Sands Smith".
