This Colonial flat button is in great condition. It was down about 6 inches, 8 feet from the skirt of the tall magnolia tree off the sw corner of the house, on the sw side of the tree. This region of the yard continues to be a hot spot for lots of items dating from the mid 18th century to the late 19th century. In many holes I will find multiple items of interest including glass, ceramic, pottery, nails, brick, clay pipe stems, and of course my target item which is usually a button, buckle, or stray piece of old brass relics. There is a large sunken area in this region of the yard (area 3 on property map), I am starting to think this is an old trash pit. Dig down about two feet anywhere in this region and you will find lots of coal, glass, ceramic, pottery, nails, etc... The problem is at 18 to 24 inches water starts seeping into the hole and in a matter of minutes there is 6 inches or more of water in your hole. From here on all dirt in this area will be screened before I refill the hole. I hope to dig a 4'x4' plot in this area during the driest season of summer.
This wooden handle pocket knife was found on the north side of the house. I have found a number of these but never one in good enough shape to keep. This one is a keeper!
